About me
I'm an experienced Social Studies teacher, instructional coach, and consultant. My interest in Social Studies and inquiry education led me to create Realizing Social Studies. This website is dedicated to sharing my practice, learnings, and wonderings about inquiry and the C3 Framework for Social Studies.
Why this site?
At it's heart, inquiry is about using questions to drive teaching and learning. When conceived this way, Social Studies is less about what we teach and more about how we set the table for student learning that is both deep and engaging. Through questioning, engaging with sources, and using evidence, students construct understandings of themselves and the world around them that are relevant, meaningful, and grounded in the disciplines of social studies.
If that sounds exciting, then this website is for you. But it is so much easier said than done. Making an inquiry approach work in the classroom is complex and challenging; it forces us to unlearn many old practices even as we learn and discover new ones. This site exists to share resources, inspiration, and struggles from this complex and rewarding transition.

Everything on this site is absolutely free. All I ask is that you do not modify, redistribute, or sell any of the resources. Even so, I know that many will have great ideas about how to improve or apply things in different contexts. I'd love to hear about what use you put these resources to, how they work, and how you might improve them.
Coaching
I offer one on one and team coaching for teachers and school leaders as they transition to or refine the application of inquiry based social studies.
Consulting
I facilitate workshops aimed at giving educators a learner's experience of inquiry based socials studies. Focuses include staging inquiry, developing inquiry questions, planning, and assessing.
